England in semis after 28 years, with 8 set-piece goals, and a clean sheet at last

England are through to the semi-finals of a World Cup for just the third time, and the first in 28 years. They last made the World Cup semis in 1990, when they were eliminated by Germany on penalties. Their only other time in the top four was in 1966, when they won the World Cup as hosts.

England have scored eight of their 11 goals from dead-ball situations at this World Cup, with Harry Maguire's headed goal the fourth they have scored from a corner. They have also converted three penalties, and one goal from a free-kick. The three goals from open play were scored by Jesse Lingard, Dele Alli and Harry Kane.

Dele Alli is the fifth England goal-scorer at the 2018 World Cup, the joint-highest they have had at one tournament since the victorious campaign of 1966. Alli joins Harry Kane (six), John Stones (two), Jesse Lingard and Harry Maguire (one each) to mark just the third time England have had five different scorers at World Cup, besides 1954 and 1998.

Dele Alli is the second-youngest England player to score in a World Cup, at the age of 22 years and 87 days. Michael Owen, who scored twice at the 1998 World Cup at the age of 18, remains the youngest ever. Alli went past Jimmy Greaves, who was 22 years and 103 days old when he scored at the 1962 World Cup.

This was England's seventh clean sheet in World Cup knockout games. They're tied fifth in the all-time list, with Germany (15), Brazil (11), Italy (10) and France (9) ahead of them, and Argentina (7) tied. It was also their first clean sheet of this edition, helping them avoid the fate of the Belgium team from 1986, who were the last team make the semis without a single clean sheet.

Sweden's Marcus Berg is the only player since 1966 with at least 8 shots on goal from inside the penalty area and 0 goals. Even in Saturday's quarter-final, he was the only player on the pitch with two shots on goal, both of them from inside the penalty area. There have been 43 players since 1966 to have had at least eight shots on goal from inside the penalty area in one tournament, and Berg is the only one to go goalless.
