England's Gareth Southgate expects Luke Shaw injury to not be serious, sidelined for at least a week

Gareth Southgate is hopeful that Luke Shaw will be sidelined for no longer than a week after the Manchester United defender sustained a concussion during England's UEFA Nations League defeat against Spain on Saturday.

Shaw performed impressively on his first England appearance for 18 months at Wembley, setting up the opening goal for United teammate Marcus Rashford, before he was involved in an ugly aerial collision with Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal.

Replays showed Shaw's head had struck both Carvajal and the turf as he landed, and he was stretchered off the pitch after seven minutes of treatment, but Southgate does not expect him to miss much action.

"All being well he has a mandatory six to seven-day rest period, but he should be back as soon as that is done," Southgate said of Shaw.

Dele Alli has also withdrawn from the England squad ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Switzerland at the King Power Stadium with a minor muscle injury, and Southgate revealed the midfielder has returned to Tottenham to ensure he is fit for Saturday's clash with Liverpool.

"He's had a minor strain but I think he should be fine for his club this weekend," Southgate said of Alli. "I thought Dele's performance was good against Spain. He makes critical forward runs and he learned a lot from the game."

Leicester City pair Ben Chilwell and Demarai Gray have been called up from the England under-21 squad to boost Southgate's numbers, and club teammate Harry Maguire is looking forward to introducing them to the senior group.

"They are both top players and they have been with the U21s for a long time, so they know how the England setup works," Maguire said. "We have a lot of young English players at Leicester so it will be interesting to see what comes from them."

England have lost their last three matches stretching back to their agonising World Cup semifinal defeat against Croatia -- a run Southgate is particularly keen to end against Switzerland.

"There are not many sides who have played a World Cup semifinal and third-place playoff," he pointed out. "We don't want to get in the habit of losing matches.

"There's a lot of competition for places. We have invested in the core of this squad."
