Canada, Costa Rica make winning starts in CONCACAF Gold Cup

Canada teenager Alphonso Davies scored two second-half goals as his side won 4-2 against French Guiana to kick off the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup in New Jersey on Friday.

First-half goals from Scott Arfield and Dejan Jakovic had put the Canadians 2-0 up before Davies, 16, took over early in the second half, outpacing two defenders before finishing coolly.

Octavio Zambrano's team looked to be cruising but French Guiana scored twice in succession through Roy Contout and Sloan Privat before Daviues struck again with five minutes to go.

A goal from Costa Rica forward Marco Urena was enough to give his side a 1-0 win over Honduras.

Urena struck after 39 minutes when he converted a Rodney Wallace cross to break the deadlock at Red Bull Arena.

But Honduras missed a good chance to equalise as the game entered its final quarter of an hour, substitute Alberth Elis firing over the bar.

Costa Rica's next game in Group A comes against Canada on July 11, while Honduras face French Guiana.
