Carlos Vela: Mexico will give Juan Carlos Osorio full support if he stays on

Manager Juan Carlos Osorio's future with the Mexico remains clouded in mystery a little more than a week following Mexico's elimination from the 2018 World Cup.

It is unclear whether either Osorio or the Mexican federation wants to renew the Colombian's contract for four more years, but national team standout Carlos Vela says the manager will have the support of the team if he stays on with El Tri.

LAFC's Vela made it clear that his teammates on the national team must lend Osorio their unconditional support should he decide to stay.

"The players will support him if he stays, but it's not our decision to make," Vela said. "The federation is in the midst of several changes. They don't know yet what's going to happen so I don't think it's the time to discuss it. The moment will come to see who stays and who doesn't so that decisions can be made."

Vela didn't hide his frustration at his side being eliminated in the Round of 16, a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Brazil. Once more, Mexico was left longing for a fifth game, a goal it hasn't accomplished in seven straight World Cups.

"You give it everything you've got, help your team so that the wins come for your country," said Vela, who is on his way to returning to his MLS team. "Obviously, when that didn't happen I wasn't happy, our goals weren't met. That's my take on it. I really enjoyed being with my teammates and representing Mexico, but I didn't go where I wanted to go."

Vela wouldn't say whether he would answer future calls to represent Mexico. It's worth remembering that the forward has a record of turning El Tri down in past World Cup cycles, citing personal reasons on one occasion and a lack of playing time during the qualifying rounds on another.

"I don't know [if I'll respond to future call-ups]," he said. "Obviously, when the federation decides what changes are going to take place, we'll know what players are going to continue because we also know that it's a long process."
