Cameroon's Ambroise Oyongo ruled out of Confederations Cup

Cameroon will be without defender Ambroise Oyongo for their upcoming FIFA Confederations Cup campaign after the 25-year-old picked up an injury over the weekend.

The Montreal Impact left-back was hospitalised after the Indomitable Lions' 1-0 victory over Morocco on Saturday, and has subsequently been diagnosed with a ruptured patellar tendon.

"After being injured during the match played on Saturday June 10 in Yaoundé against Morocco, Ambroise Oyongo Bitolo was taken to a hospital in Yaoundé where the diagnosis made by the medical staff of the indomitable Lions was confirmed by an MRI," read a statement issued by the Cameroon Football Federation.

"Indeed, the defender was the victim of a rupture of the patellar tendon and must therefore undergo surgery.

"In collaboration with his club, the Cameroon Football Federation is organizing for an evacuation as soon as possible," continued the statement. "The player is therefore forfeited for the Confederations Cup which starts next weekend."

Oyongo was a key player for Hugo Broos's side during their unexpected Africa Cup of Nations triumph in Gabon earlier this year, starting every one of the Central Africans' matches en route to their fifth continental success.

Cameroon, competing in the Confederations Cup for the first time since 2003, begin their campaign against Chile in Moscow on Sunday June 18.

They have also been drawn alongside Australia and world champions Germany in Group B.
