Victor Matfield among three names shortlisted for Bulls' Super Rugby coach

Rugby

Springboks and Blue Bulls legend Victor Matfield was announced on a shortlist of candidates for the role of the Bulls Super Rugby head coach on Monday.

Matfield, who enjoyed a stint as the Golden Lions' forwards coach during the 2017 Currie Cup, is no stranger to the Bulls.

The lock forward captained the Bulls to three Super Rugby titles, and amassed 127 Test caps for South Africa during his illustrious career.

The position of Bulls head coach has been left vacant since the team's 2018 Super Rugby coach, John Mitchell, left Pretoria to take up the role of defense coach with Eddie Jones' England.

With Mitchell gone, his forwards coach Pote Human, who has also been added to the shortlist, took over the Blue Bulls' head coaching job for this year's Currie Cup campaign. His team lost in the semi-final stage in extra-time against Western Province.

The third and final name put forward by the Blue Bulls company is that of Southern Kings coach Dean Davids.

Davids has coached the Port Elizabeth-based side since 2016 and has led his squad in both Super Rugby and the PRO14.

The three names were agreed upon by the Blue Bulls Company after their annual board meeting.

The three will be subject to a final round of interview in the coming weeks, with an announcement shortly thereafter, according to a press release from the team.
