NAIROBI: Defending champions Kenya and World Series side Spain have qualified for the quarter-finals at the 2018 Safari Rugby Sevens tournament.

Under new coach Paul Murunga, hosts Kenya, who are missing some players busy with the Rugby World Cup Repechage tournament which starts of Sunday, beat Stanbic Mwanba 53-0 before they humbled English side Apache 42-0.

Kenya Shujaa completed their group A campaign with a 38-12 win over Namibia to keep a 1000% unbeaten run.

The home side will now face another English side, Red Wailers, in the first quarter final on Sunday at the RFUEA Grounds.

"We had a good day with three wins. We are hopeful of playing better rugby in the knockout stage to retain the trophy," Murunga told KweseESPN after the day's play.

Spain also managed to make it to the knockout stage from Group B, although they lost 19-14 to English side Samurai RFC. The Spanish national side stopped Red Wailers 19-14 and Uganda's Emerging Cranes 24-19.

While Spain will battle Portugal in the quarters, Kenya's second team Morans will face a tough hurdle against Namibia, while Samurai RFC take on Kenya national Circuit winners Homeboyz RFC.

In the women's category Kenya Lionesses beat Uganda's Emerging Lady Cranes 40-5, while Uganda's Lady Cranes defeated Kenya Select side 21-5 in some of the game played.

The tournament has attracted 12 men's teams; Kenya Shujaa, Samurai, Red Wailers, Spain, Emerging Uganda Cranes, Uganda Cranes, Kenya Morans, Portugal, Homeboyz, Namibia, Apache and Stanbic Mwamba
