The Southern Kings won for only the second time in the PRO14, causing a massive upset by beating Glasgow Warriors 38-28 at the Nelson Mandela Bay University Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

It was the Kings' first victory of the season and only second overall since they joined the northern hemisphere competition.

Last season, in their maiden appearance, the Kings won only one of 21 matches, losing the other 20.

The Kings outscored their visitors, previously unbeaten this season and semi-finalists in the last campaign, by five tries to one.

Martin du Toit (2), Yaw Penxe, Rudi van Rooyen and Harlon Klaasen scored tries for the home side. Masixole Banda slotted over a penalty and five conversions.

For the Warriors, Nick Grigg, DTH van der Merwe (2) and Fraser Brown scored tries with Adam Hastings converting them all.

The Warriors had made nine changes after beating the Cheetahs last week, but were still expected to add to another win to their record at the smaller stadium where the game had been moved.

But the Kings caught their opponents on the hop with two tries in the opening 10 minutes -- the first from Penxe and the second from Du Toit.

Before the 20-minute mark there was another as Van Rooyen slipped the Warriors' tackles and the score was stretched to 21-0 with the Kings blazing and the Warriors guilty of sloppy play.

Penxe went to the sin bin soon thereafter but the Kings' scorecard remain intact as the Warriors failed to take advantage and to add insult to injury Banda put over a penalty for a 24-0 lead at halftime.

Coach David Rennie's halftime talk must have left the Scottish players' ears ringing as they came out looking belatedly fired up after the break.

But the breakthrough still did not come and the Kings got a superb fourth try as centre Klaasen gathered an offload on his own 22, chipped over the Warriors' defence and caught his own kick to speed away across two-thirds of the field to the delight of the home crowd.

Kings flanker Henry Brown went to the sin bin for 10 minutes in the second half and the Warriors were finally able to get points board as Nick Grigg went over from close range, followed by another for winger Van der Merwe to bring the score back to 31-14.

Any hopes that the Warriors might have had of then setting up a dramatic comeback ended when flyhalf Du Toit got his second try of the game with some eight minutes left. But the Warriors were able to get a bonus point with two late tries to finish with a 10-point deficit.
