England and Gloucester star Danny Cipriani has been arrested and charged with assault after an incident at a nightclub in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Cipriani, who recently returned to the England fold, was taking part in Gloucester's pre-season tour of Jersey. Police say he has been charged with common assault, larceny, assault on police, resisting arrest and being disorderly on licensed premises.

He has now been remanded in custody and will appear in court Thursday.

A statement from Gloucester Rugby said: ""Gloucester Rugby are aware of an incident involving Danny Cipriani in the early hours of Wednesday morning following an incident at a St Helier nightclub.

"He was arrested and has since been charged by police.

"He will appear at Jersey Magistrates Court at 10am [Thursday] morning.

"The club will be issuing no further comment at this time but will make a further announcement in due course."

The arrest was confirmed by a Jersey police spokesperson.

Cipriani has been warned by England coach Eddie Jones over his conduct following a number of off-field issues during his career, including a training-ground fight with a Wasps team mate and a nightclub incident while playing for Australia's Melbourne Rebels in 2011. Cipriani was also hit by a bus on a night out with Sale team mates in 2013.

Gloucester said they will make a further announcement in due course.
