Jean-Luc du Preez blow for Sharks ahead of Super Rugby derby against Stormers

Rugby

The Sharks have suffered a massive blow ahead of this weekend's crucial Super Rugby derby against the Stormers at Newlands.

On Tuesday the Sharks confirmed that flank Jean-Luc du Preez is set to miss the last two games of the regular season due to a knee ligament injury.

Du Preez suffered the injury against the Lions last Saturday, after he was forced to leave the field inside the opening five minutes after suffering an MCL sprain on his left knee.

Du Preez will miss the clash against the Stormers, as well as the important fixture against the Jaguares at Kings Park.

However, Springbok hooker Akker van der Merwe is expected to face the Stormers this weekend despite sustaining a shoulder injury against the Lions.

Meanwhile, the Stormers are set to welcome back hooker Scarra Ntubeni and lock JD Schickerling for Saturday's clash. However, scrumhalf Justin Phillips is battling a rib injury and will be assessed in the week to determine if he is fit to play.

The Stormers will also be without fullback SP Marais, who has a quad injury, as well as lock Eben Etzebeth who continues to recover from a back and nerve injury.

The other players on the Cape team's long-term injury list are Jaco Coetzee (repeated concussion), Seabelo Senatla (groin) and Dan du Plessis (knee), with their return to be determined by how their recovery progresses.
