Danny Wilson pulls out of Wasps move to become Scotland assistant

Rugby, Aviva Premiership

Danny Wilson has pulled out of a planned move to become Wasps' forwards coach to join Gregor Townsend's Scotland staff.

Wilson, who left Cardiff Blues after a three-year spell as their head coach following their Challenge Cup success, had been due to join Dai Young's coaching staff in Coventry but after receiving an offer to replace Dan McFarland in Townsend's coaching set up.

"I'm delighted that we've been able to secure Danny's services and would like to thank Wasps and Dai Young [Wasps Director of Rugby] for enabling that to happen," Townsend said.

Wilson's arrival could mean that McFarland, who is serving his notice period ahead of a move to Ulster to become their head coach, could be allowed to leave sooner than the planned January date.

While Wasps agreed to release Wilson from his contract, Young could not hide his disappointment in losing the chance to add Wilson to his staff at Wasps.

"The timing could not be much worse," Young said. "Finding someone of Danny's quality and experience who is available at this time of year to supplement our existing coaching team is a difficult proposition.

"Disappointing as this is, I understand that the opportunity to coach a tier one international side through to and beyond the World Cup would always be difficult to turn down as opportunities like this do not come around very often.
