Warren Gatland: Wales, England 'poles apart' heading into autumn

Wales coach Warren Gatland believes Wales and England are "poles apart" heading towards next year's World Cup.

Gatland's side will leave Argentina as the only northern hemisphere side to have won all of their games on their end of season tour after sealing a series victory with a 30-12 win over the Pumas in Santa Fe.

In contrast, England could hardly have endured a worse tour: Eddie Jones' side fell to the Barbarians at Twickenham before losing their series to South Africa with a game remaining, to make it six defeats on the bounce. Gatland believes Wales, who will move above England in World Rugby's rankings, are in a much better position.

"The difference between the teams right now in terms of where we are and where they are is poles apart," Gatland said.

Wales, who have won five consecutive matches, are set to move up to third in the world rankings, while England are set to be bumped down to sixth. Gatland knows there are stern tests ahead with just 15 months to go until the World Cup in Japan.

"New Zealand are still pretty good, there's Ireland and South Africa look like they're coming good," Gatland said.

"We're in a good place and we know when we put out our best side -- what that is at the moment I'm not sure -- we're able to compete with the big boys.

"The last two World Cups have shown with the right preparation, we can get a side together who are ready to compete and do well.

"We should have made a semi-final in 2015 -- we lost the lead to South Africa with a few minutes to go -- and in 2011 we should have reached a World Cup final."
