Bath have bolstered their squad for next season by signing young England wing prospect Joe Cokanasiga from relegated London Irish on a three-year deal.

Irish had hoped to loan him to Bath in a bid to retain him for a potential return to the top flight in 2019-20 but the player has instead moved on a permanent contract.

Academy product Cokanasiga scored four tries in 16 Aviva Premiership appearances this term and his performances have impressed England head coach Eddie Jones. He toured Argentina last summer and was named in the 31-man squad for next week's training sessions in Brighton and a clash with the Barbarians at Twickenham.

"I am genuinely excited to be joining Bath," Cokanasiga said. "It is tough to leave Irish, having loved my time there, and I would like to thank everyone involved with the club for the opportunities they have given me.

"However, I feel the environment at Bath is exactly what I need to grow and develop as a player both on and off the field and ultimately achieve my international ambitions. There is huge potential to achieve success, and I am really looking forward to spending my long-term future with the club."

Bath qualified for next season's Champions Cup with a string of good displays at the end of the season and director of rugby Todd Blackadder is delighted to add Cokanasiga to a backline which already boasts Anthony Watson, Jonathan Joseph and fellow new signing Jamie Roberts.

"We're delighted to bring in Joe for next season. He is an exciting prospect, and at just 20 years-old has his entire career in front of him. We know he will bring a lot to the environment moving forwards, and we are all looking forward to helping him achieve his full potential.

"Joe brings power, pace and a huge physical presence to the wing position, which will be invaluable to us for many seasons."
