Lions skipper Whiteley suffers fresh injury blow

Rugby, Super Rugby

Springbok captain Warren Whiteley has suffered another set-back in his attempt to return from injury when he was withdrawn from the Lions squad for their Super Rugby tour Down Under on Thursday.

The loose-forward must now be considered a major doubt for the Boks' June international programme that sees them take on Wales in Washington, before three home tests against England.

"Warren Whiteley has not been medically cleared by the Lions Rugby Company Medical Team and will not join the Emirates Lions on Tour until he is Medically cleared," the Lions said in a brief statement on Thursday.

Whiteley has missed much of the last year through injury but had been set to return for the trip to Australasia before he broke down again this week.

"Warren returned to training and while he was running he felt a click in his knee," Lions team doctor Rob Collins told Sport24 on Wednesday.

"The knee swelled up a bit over night and he doesn't feel comfortable with it. We just want to take a precaution and send him for a scan. He'll see an orthopaedic surgeon."

The results of that visit to the surgeon have clearly laid him low again, though the Lions have given no indication of how long he will be out for, though their terse statement suggests he could yet travel at some stage. The Lions will face the Waratahs on Friday, before clashes against the Reds (April 28), Hurricanes (May 5) and Highlanders (May 12).
