New Stade Francais head coach Heyneke Meyer has stated his intention to make the club into one of the best in the world as he was unveiled in Paris on Monday.

The former Springboks coach takes over a side, two points clear of second from bottom Oyonnax, with a further four points separating them and bottom side Brive, who they face in two week's time before they play playoff-battling La Rochelle on the final day of the season.

"The goals may take some time to come to fruition, but I never make promises that I can't keep. I like to under-promise and over-deliver," Meyer said at the Stade Jean-Bouin.

"When I had a meeting with Doctor Wild [club chairman Dr. Hans-Peter Wild] I said to him I don't want to go into rugby or a team if I can't have the same vision to build the best team in the world."

Since winning their last Bouclier de Brennus in 2015, Stade went through a difficult time with a proposed merger with Racing 92 cancelled, before former president Thomas Savare sold the club to Wild in May 2017.

While the team who finishes bottom will be relegated, second-from-bottom will face a relegation playoff against the second-placed side in the Pro D2, with the winner having a place in next season's Top 14.
