Wasps head coach Dai Young condemned his side's performance despite beating London Irish 24-16 at the Ricoh Arena.

Tom Cruse's score three minutes from time, his second of the afternoon, settled the game for nervy Wasps, who allowed Irish to score two late tries and hurl themselves back into the contest.

The victory moved Wasps up to second place in the Aviva Premiership table but Young was far from pleased with the display he saw from his team.

"It was very close; in all honesty I thought the best team lost, we were really poor," Young fumed.

"I suppose the big positive is we found a way to win but if a couple of their kicks had gone over it could've been a different story.

"It was a really disappointing performance, but certainly I would settle for where we are in the table at this moment in time.

"I think we are second, I would've taken that before this block of games but the performance leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

"I don't take anything away from Irish -- it was really cruel on them as that was a game that they could and perhaps should have won.

"If you look at the stats, the amount of handling errors we made, and our lack of territory after going into half-time with a 60-40 advantage, it was disappointing.

"After that they controlled territory, and in total I think we gave away nine penalties, 10 turnovers, six of which were handling errors. We looked shadows of ourselves today and it was a pretty tired and flat team."
