Toulon president Mourad Boudjellal has been hit with a misconduct complaint from European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) over comments he made to French media last month. Boudjellal told rugbyrama.fr that he feared "the Mormon side of EPCR with the Welsh and the Irish" after Matthieu Bastareaud was charged by the Champions Cup organisers over an alleged homophobic remark he made in Toulon's win over Treviso on Jan. 14. France centre Bastareaud was subsequently handed a three-week suspension, while the EPCR has since been investigating the comments made by his boss. On Monday it was announced that Boudjellal would now be called in front of an independent disciplinary committee, although the date of his hearing has not been decided. "Following an investigation, EPCR has decided to bring a misconduct complaint against the President of RC Toulon, Mourad Boudjellal," a statement released European club rugby's governing body read. "After the Champions Cup, Round 5 match between RC Toulon and Benetton Rugby on 14 January, Mr Boudjellal was reported to have made comments to a media organisation which may have constituted breaches of the Disciplinary Rules and the Media Rules of the 2017-18 EPCR Participation Agreement. "The comments attributed to Mr Boudjellal were prompted by an incident during the match in which the RC Toulon captain, Mathieu Bastareaud, verbally abused a Benetton Rugby player. Bastareaud was cited following the incident and was subsequently suspended for three weeks."
