Montpellier owner hints Goosen may come out of retirement

Johan Goosen may come out of retirement after Montpellier owner Mohed Altrad said there is a '30% chance' that the former Springbok will play for the French club next season.

Goosen shocked the rugby fraternity when he 'retired' from the game at the end of 2016 while still being contracted to Racing 92. The former Cheetahs flyhalf signed a new four-year, €500 000 deal with the French club shortly before announcing plans to take up a job as a commercial director in South Africa.

At the time Racing threatened to take legal action against the then 24-year-old Goosen, but it's believed that it could cost Montpellier, or any other team wishing to sign Goosen, €1-million to get him out of his contract.

In June last year, French sports daily L'Équipe took pictures of Goosen practising his goal-kicking in Bloemfontein, which suggests that he could be close to returning to rugby.

"I would say that there is a 30% chance that it will happen. It all depends on the will of his current employer," Altrad French newspaper Midi Olympique.

"I remind you that Goosen is still in the squad of Racing. If I can release him, he will strengthen our workforce for the 2018-2019 season. But in what state will it be? It will be 18 months that he will not have played."
