Stormers draft in Whitehead as flyhalf cover in Super Rugby

Rugby, Super Rugby

The Stormers have moved to ease their number 10 concerns with the acquisition on loan of Griquas flyhalf George Whitehead, according to reports in South Africa.

Whitehead, who can also play at fullback, has been drafted in as cover with the Super Rugby side short on experienced options in the flyhalf position, Sport24 reported.

Robert du Preez has left the team for the Sharks, Kurt Coleman is playing for the Southern Kings in Pro14 and Jean-Luc du Plessis is out as he recovers from a hip injury.

The exciting junior Springbok Damian Willemse could be the starting pivot for coach Robbie Fleck, but the 19-year-old, seen as an immense emerging talent, has just a handful of games at this level.

Aside from Whitehead, the Stormers have also brought in Josh Stander from the Bulls. Bloemfontein-born Whitehead has previously represented the Kings and Cheetahs in Super Rugby.

The Stormers open their 2018 Super Rugby campaign at home to the Jaguares on February 17.
