Powell laments Blitsboks' lack of execution

Rugby, World Rugby Sevens Series

Springbok Sevens coach says Neill Powell says the Blitzboks' performances at the Cape Town leg of the World Sevens Series didn't meet their expectations.

The South African side headed into their home tournament as the big favourites following their win in Dubai, and after being crowned 2016-17 World Sevens Series champions earlier this year.

However, after narrowly beating Fiji in the quarter-finals, the South Africans went down to New Zealand in the semis, and eventually finished third after beating Canada in the Bronze medal match.

"We had a good first day, but on Sunday we came up short in our execution," said Powell.

"We did not protect the ball when we needed to, and will have a look back after our break on where we need to improve for the next two tournaments in Australia and New Zealand (next year)."

Despite the home team's struggles on day two, the atmosphere at the Cape Town Stadium was simply electric, and Blitzboks captain thanked the crowed for their support after another successful tournament.

"Obviously we wanted to contest the final, but it was not to be. The win over Canada was a positive though," Snyman said.

"It was amazing playing in front of a packed stadium. Even when we did not win against New Zealand, the crowd backed us and it was a great feeling to know your fans back to till the end.

"That is why we love playing here in Cape Town, in front of out passionate supporters."
