SA Select, Kenya dominate on day one of Safland Sevens

World Rugby Sevens Series, Rugby

The Kenya Sevens team and a South African Select outfit look like the teams to beat after the first day of the Safland Sevens tournament in Swakopmund, Namibia.

Kenya beat Namibia 12-0 in their opening match of the tournament on Friday, before thumping an injury-ravaged Zambian outfit 31-0 in their second outing late in the day.

The SA Select team, featuring former Springbok wing Cornal Hendricks, played three matches on the opening day and won all of them. The South Africans beat Zambia 20-14 in their opening match, before taking care of the Bulls 24-7 in their second match.

But the SA Select team kept their best performance for the last match of the day when they hammered the hosts 31-5, with Hendricks getting on the score sheet despite taking a few tasty late hits by the home side's players.

The Namibian team, who have made great strides in Sevens over the last few years despite minimal resources, were quite disappointing on the day. The home side narrowly lost their first match of the day 7-0 to the Bulls, before going down to Kenya and the SA Select side.

Kenya will start of proceedings in Pool A on Saturday morning against the Bulls, with Namibia and Zambia playing shortly after.

Pool A wraps up with the Bulls taking on Zambia, before Kenya and the SA Select team square off in what could prove to be a dress rehearsal for the final.
