Ireland captain Niamh Briggs ruled out of Women's Rugby World Cup

Ireland's preparations for their home Women's Rugby World Cup have suffered a blow after captain Niamh Briggs was ruled out of the tournament through injury.

Briggs had battled back from a hamstring injury -- that kept her out of the Six Nations -- to take her place in coach Tom Tierney's 28-woman squad.

However, she suffered an Achilles injury in training which means she will play no part in the World Cup, which kicks off in just nine days' time.

"Both the players and management are really disappointed for Niamh as everyone has seen the incredible work and effort she's put in over the last number of months in an attempt to get herself right for this tournament," Tierney said.

"For her to have recovered well from her hamstring injury and then suffer a new injury is really unfortunate for her, as everyone knows how much she was looking forward to leading the team in the World Cup."

Louise Galvin has been called up as cover for the fullback, and an announcement over the Ireland captaincy will be made in the coming days.
