All Blacks and Crusaders centre Ryan Crotty has extended his stay in New Zealand rugby until the end of 2018.

The 28-year-old, who has pulled on the black jumper 27 times, said he was not ready to play rugby outside of New Zealand.

He didn't rule out staying in the country after 2018, with a 2019 Rugby World Cup midfield berth his for the taking.

"I like to take things one year at a time and, when I thought about where I could picture myself in 2018, I just didn't feel like my time here in New Zealand was up yet," Crotty said in a statement.

"I still get a thrill each time I pull on the black or red and black jerseys and I feel really motivated to perform for those teams. I genuinely think I have my best rugby in me yet and I want to play that rugby for the teams I have grown up supporting and who I feel so honoured to play for now,"

He scored the All Blacks' last-gasp try against Ireland to help preserve their unbeaten 2013 Test campaign, and has since gone on to cement his role in the world champions' post-World Cup midfield.

Crotty made 11 Test appearances in 2016, as well as one against the British & Irish Lions before coming off in the first Test with a hamstring injury.
