Boks will make history with France win at Ellis Park

South Africa will hope to complete a clean sweep of their home June internationals on Saturday at Ellis Park, a ground where New Zealand and France are the only countries to have proven victorious since 1972.

The British and Irish Lions grabbed a win at the venue in 2009, but apart from that the Springboks have been utterly dominant against all other teams over the past 45 years.

However, there is one huge proviso to the above statements... the Springboks will have to make history to get a series sweep.

Ellis Park is seen, in many ways, as the 'home' of Bok rugby, a ground at energy-sapping high altitude, with an atmosphere that bristles with hostility towards visiting teams.

Former New Zealand captain Richie McCaw stated three years ago that he and many other All Blacks saw it as one of the greatest challenge in rugby, to win a Test at Ellis Park. "Playing the Springboks at Ellis Park is one of the ultimate challenges of playing Test footy," McCaw told reporters in October 2014, before the All Blacks' 27-25 Rugby Championship loss there.

"The atmosphere, like anywhere you play in South Africa, can be pretty daunting, but it's also the type of atmosphere you want to play in. If you go out and perform well you can use that to your advantage."

But if the Boks are to win the series 3-0 this weekend, they must record a first ever victory over France at their favourite 'home', which is arguably one of the more bizarre statistics in world rugby.

France triumphed 9-5 on their first visit in 1958, before claiming a 19-14 victory in 1967. Their first post-Apartheid visit to the country came in 1993 and they kept their run going with a slender 18-17 win.

As it is, their last success on the ground, in 2001, was most emphatic as flyhalf Gerald Merceron booted 22 points to go with a try in a 32-23 win.

The Boks will consider those games all ancient history that provide little bearing on Saturday's fixture, but perhaps it will provide just a little added spark to end the barren run.

Also, with so many players in the squad from the Lions Super Rugby franchise, which has its home base at Ellis Park, there will certainly be a familiarity among the players with the surroundings.

South Africa won the first two Tests of the series in Pretoria (37-14) and Durban (37-15).
