The City of Cape Town has told KweséESPN they are confident that Western Province Rugby will receive the required venue safety certificate in order to host the Rugby Championship Test between the Springboks and the All Blacks at Newlands on 7 October.

Newlands was announced as the host venue by South African Rugby earlier this week, the first time the All Blacks will play a Test in Cape Town since 2008.

But there was a proviso to the announcement, that the stadium operators need to obtain the relevant safety documentation from the City of Cape Town before the venue could be rubber-stamped.

New national regulations contained in the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act came into affect in March this year, specifically around fire, evacuation and building safety.

It has left venues around the country scrambling to get their certification in place, but Alderman JP Smith, the City of Cape Town's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, believes there will be no issue with Newlands.

"We didn't wait for a problem to occur with Newlands, we went to Western Province Rugby and said to them, 'let's get your certificate in order," Smith told KweseESPN on Friday. "The process is just about completed and they will comply. We have been working extensively with them to work out any issues and there will be no problem."

Western Province Rugby had earlier on Friday issued a statement in which they expressed confidence they would meet the June deadline for their certificate.

"We have been in regular contact with both the City and SA Rugby regarding the new application requirements and have been working on meeting the new requirements for some time in consultation with our health and safety advisors," WP Rugby Group CEO Paul Zacks said.

"WP Rugby takes safety and security at Newlands very seriously, and full fire and disaster risk management preparations - including an assessment of the stadium - are regularly undertaken by the City as a part of their event risk assessment and certification process.

"We are confident that we will meet the requirements under the new regulations. In fact WP Rugby recently achieved 89 percent for an event compliance audit conducted by independent specialist risk consultants, the highest score achieved in respect of rugby stadiums in South Africa hosting Super Rugby matches.

"It goes without saying that WP Rugby is excited to be able to host the All Blacks at Newlands and we have therefore done everything we can to make the necessary application and satisfy the City as regards any safety requirements that they have."
