Match Commentary

81'+120-22 End of second half
80'South Africa effect a turnover but they are going nowhere. Embrose Papier makes a halfbreak from the left wing into midfield, but South Africa make a mistake two phases later and Wales are victorious.
79'Wales are holding position in South African territory, as they look to keep the ball away from their own half.
79'Substitute on - Aled Davies , Wales
79'Player substituted - Tomos Williams , Wales
78'Ellis Jenkins effects a turnover that might just secure victory with 90 seconds to play.
77'Player substituted - Makazole Mapimpi , South Africa
77'Substitute on - Embrose Papier , South Africa
75'20-22 Try - Ryan Elias , Wales
74'Robert du Preez has a kick charged down from inside his goal, and Travis Ismail can't collect the ball. Ryan Elias touches down and Wales are back in front.
74'20-17 Penalty goal - Robert du Preez , South Africa
73'Robert du Preez kicks a penalty goal with all but his first touch of the ball.
72'Player substituted - Elton Jantjies , South Africa
72'Substitute on - Robert du Preez , South Africa
71'Player substituted - Elliot Dee , Wales
71'Substitute on - Ryan Elias , Wales
70'Good work from South Africa to effect a turnover deep in Wales territory, only for Elton Jantjies to spill the pill. That's Jantjies' last contribution to the game.
69'Scrappy spell. Travis Ismail spills the pill to gift Wales a lineout, which Marvin Orie steals but South Africa lose the ball in contact on attack. Cue grinding teeth in the Republic.
67'Armand van der Merwe has certainly made an impression since entering the fray. Giving the Boks a thrust in the loose.
66'Wales now back to a full 15-man complement.
64'Teams are each sparring in midfield without threatening to break though. Elton Jantjies kicks deep but Wales defend well and Tomos Williams clears his lines from a ruck.
62'Player substituted - Jason Jenkins , South Africa
62'Substitute on - Marvin Orie , South Africa
61'South Africa have reacted well from their deficit at halftime; they looked short of ideas going to oranges but now look to be in the ascendancy with the scores level and a one-man advantage.
60'17-17 Conversion - Elton Jantjies , South Africa
59'15-17 Try - Makazole Mapimpi , South Africa
58'Makazole Mapimpi touches down in the corner for his first try on debut, crossing for a well-worked score on second phase from the scrum.
57'Yellow card - Owen Watkin , Wales
56'No complaints there from Wales about the decision to sin-bin Owen Watkin. Can the Springboks capitalise?
55'South Africa deep in Wales territory, and the Wales defender Owen Watkin deliberately plays the ball out of play.
54'Substitute on - Sikhumbuzo Notshe , South Africa
54'Player substituted - Daniel du Preez , South Africa
53'Player substituted - Dillon Lewis , Wales
53'Substitute on - Rhodri Jones , Wales
53'Substitute on - Akker van der Merwe , South Africa
53'Player substituted - Chiliboy Ralepelle , South Africa
50'South Africa attack from a bust by Andre Esterhuizen and Jesse Kriel, but it comes to nothing. Esterhuizen close to the best Springboks player on the pitch given he's the best / only attacking thrust they have.
50'Substitute on - Warrick Gelant , South Africa
50'Player substituted - Curwin Bosch , South Africa
49'Player substituted - Nicky Smith , Wales
49'Substitute on - Wyn Jones , Wales
48'Huge break from Ross Moriarty, in first-phase play from a lineout, but Wales lose the ball forward in second phase. Initial throw looked anything but straight but South Africa were exposed by the break.
48'10-17 Penalty goal - Gareth Anscombe , Wales
46'South Africa penalised for sealing off a ruck trying to clear the ball out of their 22. Wales to kick for goal.
45'Substitute on - Thomas du Toit , South Africa
45'Player substituted - Wilco Louw , South Africa
45'Player substituted - Ox Nche , South Africa
45'Substitute on - Steven Kitshoff , South Africa
45'10-14 Conversion - Elton Jantjies , South Africa
44'8-14 Try - Travis Ismaiel , South Africa
43'Travis Ismail crosses the line, after picking off a no-look pass from Hallam Amos. Something out of nothing.
42'South Africa on the attack with players running on the gainline, but Elton Jantjies blows the opportunity by kicking direct into touch.
41'No doubt Wales fans will be happy with the state of play, leading 14-3, but we can only hope for sharper execution from all players in the second half.
41'Substitute on - Curwin Bosch , South Africa
41'Player substituted - Warrick Gelant , South Africa
41'3-14 End of first half
40'That's halftime. South Africa looked the better team until conceding the first try of the game; Wales promptly scored the second try of the game, and they're firmly on top at the teams head to the sheds.
40'3-14 Start of second half
39'South Africa put the ball through phases, but without confidence, and they lose the ball in contact, and Wales kick the ball into touch.
38'South Africa have a five-metre lineout after Wales were penalised for entering a ruck from the side.
37'South Africa seem not to know what to do, or to react, having conceded two quick tries. They had been the better team, but now they're behind on the scoreboard they seem to lack confidence in whatever the game plan was.
36'3-14 Conversion - Gareth Anscombe , Wales
35'Wales now lead comfortably after certainly being second best. South Africa had been good on defence, but they've paid the price for missed tackles in a a five-minute spell.
34'Wales in the ascendancy, with another attack launched after Gareth Anscombe beats two players, and Tomos Williams touches down on Test debut after two missed tackles.
34'3-12 Try - Tomos Williams , Wales
32'Substitute on - Warrick Gelant , South Africa
32'Player substituted - Curwin Bosch , South Africa
32'3-7 Conversion - Gareth Anscombe , Wales
31'Good play from Wales. Good hands and swift short passes to Hallam Amos touch down. The best passage of play in the game to this point and a good try.
31'3-5 Try - Hallam Amos , Wales
30'Player substituted - Steffan Evans , Wales
30'Substitute on - Hadleigh Parkes , Wales
29'Wales wing Steff Evans limps off the pitch after seeming to hyper-extend a knee in effecting a clearing kick from hand.
28'Big hit from Jason Jenkins in defence forces a Wales mistake on the ground on halfway. Aggressive front-foot Springboks defence the most notable good point of the game to this point. Otherwise we're seeing an inordinate amount of time spent scrummaging and resetting scrummages.
25'Can only hope the crowd is full of expats who love rugby already. Nothing to this point to inspire the neutral or to fire the enthusiasm of a new market.
23'Ivan Van Zyl looking good behind the Springboks scrummage. Swift service giving his clearing kickers a fraction extra time. South Africa looking sharper in the little details at this point.
21'Handling error from Owen Watkin in first-phase play from the scrum relieves the pressure.
20'Wales developing a little momentum with offloads among the forwards, and they've forced an offensive scrummage deep in Springboks territory.
20'Player substituted - Sikhumbuzo Notshe , South Africa
20'Substitute on - Kwagga Smith , South Africa
19'3-0 Penalty goal - Elton Jantjies , South Africa
17'Hallam Amos penalised for not releasing the ball under pressure from Jason Jenkins.
16'South Africa on the front foot on defence and forcing Wales back, hitting the Dragons well behind the advantage line and forcing mistakes in contact.
14'Credit to Makazole Mapimpi and Elton Jantjies under the high ball. Each have collected well a couple of times under pressure.
11'Wilco Louw penalised in the scrum but Gareth Anscombe misses touch and South Africa roost the ball back into Welsh territory. No pattern to the game at this point.
11'Player substituted - Kwagga Smith , South Africa
11'Substitute on - Sikhumbuzo Notshe , South Africa
10'Zero momentum after two technical decisions against Wales -- at lineout and scrum -- and the the Boks losing the ball forward under contact.
6'Wet and slippery conditions, and ball security has been an issue in contact to this point.
5'Anscombe misses with his kick.
3'Travis Ismaiel penalised for not rolling away from the tackle, and Gareth Anscombe will kick for goal.
2'Springboks on the front foot after a tremendous break from Andre Esterhuizen, but they lose the ball under pressure and Wales clear their lines.
1'Solid start from South Africa, with Andre Esterhuizen collecting the ball and Wales conceding a penalty from the first contact.
1'We're under way with Gareth Anscombe kicking off.
1'Nice to hear Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika and Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau sung with passion, no matter the size of the crowd.
1'Teams about to step out into the rain, and there seems to be a lot less than the forecast 20,000 spectators in RFK Stadium.

1'Very interesting to see how this plays out. Two B teams to be sure, but still we have talented and skilled players involved.

1'Hello everyone. Welcome to our live text commentary of the Test between South Africa and Wales in Washington D.C. There's been a lot of noise about this game, and whether it should be played, but the fixture features two proud rugby nations with plenty of players having something to prove and to play for.

Springboks lock Pieter-Steph du Toit will captain a young South Africa side featuring seven uncapped players in the starting line-up, leading the team for the first time.

Wales winger George North, meanwhile, will feature at centre and Ellis Jenkins will captain the side for the first time. This game will mark 73 times-capped North's fourth Test start in midfield, where he is partnered by Ospreys' Owen Watkin.

John Goliath of KweséESPN in South Africa has named five Springboks players with much to prove and play for in Washington D.C., suggesting that Elton Jantjies and Jesse Kriel, in particular, can shape coach Rassie Erasmus' thinking with strong performances ahead of the England Tests back in South Africa.

John has also written this piece about the Springboks' 'identity crisis'.

And here's a little bit about the recent history of the fixture.

Wales have beaten South Africa in the past two encounters, played at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, but the Springboks have dominated the Welsh overall, with 28 wins to four and one draw.
