Match Commentary

81'England were very poor in the first half but improved dramatically ahead of their final November international clash with Australia.
81'Japan were brilliant in the first half and can take so much encouragement from their display. They didn't manage to take it through to the second half, but in the first they looked a very good rugby team and are building nicely towards their home World Cup.
81'+235-15 End of second half
80'England try to set up for one last try as Ford kicks to the corner. Hartley finds Lawes again but Sinckler loses it and Japan clear in a bit of a chaotic manner.
79'Japan a bit ragged now. Jack Nowell goes through a chasm of space in the middle but kicks too far forward and misses the chance of a try.

TRY
The driving maul creates another try for England. Dylan Hartley is the man who gets it down over the line after a good lineout win from Courtney Lawes and England feel much better than they did an hour ago...

TRY
Much much better from England. Excellent box-kick from Richard Wigglesworth to set it off, with Jamie George collecting. He finds Wigglesworth on the breakaway and he plays a lovely pass into Joe Cokanasiga who shrugs off a couple of tackles for a debut try.
70'Player substituted - Yu Tamura , Japan
70'Substitute on - Rikiya Matsuda , Japan
70'28-15 Try - Joe Cokanasiga , England
70'Substitute on - Yusuke Niwai , Japan
70'Player substituted - Atsushi Sakate , Japan
69'Japan respond with some brave ball-carrying again. Their attacking spell ends with a dangerous break from Tamura but England win a penalty at the resulting breakdown through the resolute Courtney Lawes.
65'23-15 Penalty goal - George Ford , England
64'Clever kick through from Owen Farrell, Henry Slade chases but can't reach it. But there's no advantage and the referee brings it back for an England penalty.

60'Player substituted - Danny Care , England
60'Substitute on - Richard Wigglesworth , England

TRY
Relief for England. Powerful forward runs from Sinckler and Itoje allow Ford to release Mark Wilson for his first international try. Good rugby, much-needed points.
59'18-15 Try - Mark Wilson , England
57'Important points for England as Ford slots between the posts. Interesting that he was chosen to stick on penalties ahead of Farrell, presumably to prepare for the World Cup next year.
56'13-15 Penalty goal - George Ford , England
54'That's nine penalties against England now. Ironically the Twickenham faithful had just started up a chorus of 'Swing Low', but it finished pretty quickly as the momentum of the attack was blunted.
52'Just as England find a little encouragement going forward they give away another penalty. This time it's Maro Itoje punished for holding on deep in Japanese territory.
51'Player substituted - Harry Williams , England
51'Substitute on - Kyle Sinckler , England
49'Substitute on - Sam Underhill , England
49'Player substituted - Zach Mercer , England
49'Player substituted - Alec Hepburn , England
49'Substitute on - Ben Moon , England
47'As you were for Japan with Leitch the man absorbing tackles while the backs continue to manoeuvre around the England defences.
45'England are reverting to type a bit here by playing the percentages, but maybe that's what they need to do. Farrell kicks for touch well before Jack Nowell makes a decent break, but Japan withstand the pressure...
41'Kick off, England 10-15 Japan
41'We're back out and with some changes. Owen Farrell is on -- an indicator of the seriousness with which England are now taking this challenge.
41'Substitute on - Owen Farrell , England
41'Player substituted - Alex Lozowski , England
41'Player substituted - Uwe Helu , Japan
41'Substitute on - Samuela Anise , Japan
41'Substitute on - Shunsuke Nunomaki , Japan
41'Player substituted - Masakatsu Nishikawa , Japan
41'Player substituted - Fumiaki Tanaka , Japan
41'Substitute on - Yutaka Nagare , Japan
41'+110-15 End of first half
40'But everything England have done badly, Japan have done well. They're dynamic, confident and full of ideas. Michael Leitch has been magnificent and his try was memorable. The Brave Blossoms will surely be thinking this is a repeat of South Africa in 2015, but arguably a win at Twickenham would be even bigger than that...
40'To be a fly-on-the-wall of the England dressing room! Eddie Jones and his coaches must be tearing them apart after that half. It was full of mistakes, ill-discipline and a feeling of complacency...
40'What a half that is for Japan but England have big problems.
40'Scrum five metres, Japan are patient, England defend with a hint of desperation..but it comes to nothing. Care kicks out for half-time.
40'10-15 Start of second half
38'And through the offloads Leitch is nearly in again! Alex Lozowski makes a brilliant tackle to shut the door as Japan go agonisingly close...
37'It's exhibition stuff from Japan in the midfield. Passes from the back of the hand, quick steps, set-piece moves. England have no answer.
34'That sin bin for Jamie George did hurt England but in truth they were off the pace since before that. Japan have been fearless, England complacent.
33'Substitute on - Henry Slade , England
33'Player substituted - Chris Ashton , England
33'Substitute on - Zach Mercer , England
33'Player substituted - Dylan Hartley , England
31'We really were not expecting this but Japan have another try! Lovely rugby again as they move it through the hands from back to front exquisitely. In the end it comes to the captain Michael Leitch who flattens Danny Care and steps round Elliot Daly with ease before diving over the line.
31'10-15 Try - Michael Leitch , Japan
28'A long one for Elliot Daly but he lands it form halfway and England are back level.
28'10-10 Penalty goal - Elliot Daly , England
24'There were mistakes and missed tackles in there for England, really summing up their start to the game. Captain George Ford and Alex Lozowski were at fault.
23'7-10 Conversion - Yu Tamura , Japan
22'They can! Japan deserved a try after an enterprising start and they now have one. It comes from a scrum five metres out. Ryoto Nakamura is the scorer after a fine pass from Fukuoka. Shock on the cards?
22'7-8 Try - Ryoto Nakamura , Japan
21'It's all scrappy form England, and the penalty count rises to five. That's one too many as Jamie George is sent to the sin bin for being off his feet at the breakdown after an encouraging spell from Japan. Can they make the extra man count?
21'Player substituted - Zach Mercer , England
21'Substitute on - Dylan Hartley , England
21'Yellow card - Jamie George , England
16'
Japan take away some reward from their spell of pressure as Tamura converts a penalty as England's discipline fails again.
16'7-3 Penalty goal - Yu Tamura , Japan
10'
Japan respond well. England are forced back to defend their line and give away successive penalties. Then Jamie George pulls off an impressive try-saving tackle on Japan fly-half Yu Tamura in the corner.
5'7-0 Conversion - George Ford , England
3'
TRY
5-0 Danny Care: England's early possession pays dividends. Japan defended bravely for a time but England kept ball in hand and a break from Joe Cokanasiga allowed Care a comfortable finish.
3'5-0 Try - Danny Care , England
1' Kick off, England 0-0 Japan
1'The anthems are done and it's almost time for the action.
1'The teams are out in the wintry sunshine at Twickenham with George Ford at the head of the line for England.
1'This may not be as high-profile as England's All Blacks clash last weekend but for Eddie Jones it matters a great deal.
1' Plenty of changes for both sides ahead of this one. The teams are on your left.
1'OK, won one lost one for England so far. A gutsy win against South Africa and a hugely encouraging defeat to New Zealand have made these November internationals interesting. Today it's a must-win game against Japan...
1'0-0 Start of first half
