Fox says it regrets insensitive bit aimed at Daniel Suarez's heritage

NASCAR

FONTANA, Calif. -- Fox Sports expressed regret for a comedic segment on its daily NASCAR program that included a bit on Mexican driver Daniel Suarez.

Comedian/actress Sarah Tiana was a guest on the FS1 "NASCAR Race Hub" show Thursday and presented superlatives for several drivers.

The item on Suarez was read and posted on the screen: "Least likely to hit the wall ... or get close to any wall now that Trump is president," with a photo of Suarez on the screen.

When some of the panelists -- including Jeff Gordon and Darrell Wallace Jr. -- appeared not to know whether to laugh, Tiana said: "That's a good joke. I'm just happy he's driving with insurance."

Joe Gibbs Racing, Suarez and NASCAR declined to comment.

Fox Sports put out a statement Friday night:

"The views expressed on Thursday's NASCAR Race Hub by comedian/actress Sarah Tiana do not represent the views of Fox Sports. We regret any insensitivity displayed toward drivers, teams and fan bases, and are reviewing the process involved in creating the segment."

Suarez, a native of Monterrey, Mexico, who won the 2016 NASCAR Xfinity Series title and is in his second year of NASCAR Cup racing, has traditionally shied away from making political statements.

When NASCAR chairman Brian France endorsed Donald Trump for president, Suarez was undeterred.

"I'm very proud of all the work, all the support I have received from NASCAR, from the United States," Suarez said two years ago. "And honestly, I'm very proud to be Mexican, to be a Latin American driver, to be a Latin American person, because ... maybe without being Mexican, who knows if I would have all the support I'm having from the United States and from NASCAR.

"Overall, I feel like everyone makes their own decisions, and there's nothing we can do about it."
