Former NASCAR driver and current regional series team owner Eric McClure was arrested Sunday on a Class 1 misdemeanor charge of assault and battery, according to the clerk's office of the Smyth County (Virginia) Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. McClure, 39, was released on an unsecured bond of $2,500, after being arrested at his home by the Smyth County Sheriff's Office following an altercation between husband and wife, according to an affidavit filed with the court clerk. He is scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 21. McClure made 288 career starts in the NASCAR Xfinity Series from 2003 to '16 with a career-best finish of eighth in the 2013 season-opening race at Daytona. He had a series of concussions and also had a lengthy bout with the Epstein-Barr virus during his career. He co-owns Martin-McClure Racing, which competes in NASCAR's regional series. Hal Martin, the team's other owner, issued a statement that McClure has taken an indefinite leave of absence from the team. Martin said the team is dedicated to a family-centered atmosphere and asked for privacy for McClure. Because his team hasn't raced this year, McClure does not have a 2018 NASCAR owner's license and therefore is not subject to any NASCAR discipline, although his arrest could affect his ability to get a license.
