Dale Earnhardt Jr. set for Homestead farewell

NASCAR

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has announced that he will retire from the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series after the 2017 season. As the Hendrick Motorsports driver prepares to climb into the race car for the final time at each track -- or at least likely for the last time, as he has left the door open for possible one-off races -- we take a look at how he has fared over the years at each venue and what to expect in his last ride there.

Dale Jr. at Homestead-Miami Speedway | Nov. 19, 2017

Starts: 16

Best finish: Third (November 2013)

Biggest highlight: Earnhardt led 28 laps and finished third in the November 2013 race, his only top-5 finish and his only finish better than 10th at the track. He started 21st in that race but had a strong car, especially on short runs, as he ended the season with three consecutive top-5 finishes.

Worst moment: In his last race for Dale Earnhardt Inc. in 2007, Earnhardt was involved in two wrecks, one when coming to pit road and then another on a restart. He finished the race, but was six laps down in 36th.

Outlook for Sunday: Earnhardt is listed as starting 24th, but he will drop to the rear for the start of the race because of an engine change. This isn't the easiest place to pass, but it's also not the hardest if the car is working well. Earnhardt will need it to work really well -- something that has happened sporadically this year -- for a shot at a top-10.

Dale Jr. says: "I like running the high side everywhere that we can, and this place begs for it. It is so much fun trying to put the car on the fence-making speed up there. ... I like the track and I'm glad we are ending on one that I like. That enjoyment for racing here will keep me engaged because I want to enjoy this weekend. But, also, we want to end well. We want to be competitive."
