Shalane Flanagan, Geoffrey Kamworor to defend New York City Marathon titles

Shalane Flanagan says she will return to defend her New York City Marathon title in November.

Geoffrey Kamworor, who won his first major marathon last year in New York, will also defend his title.

"When I think about running New York, I get a feeling of ecstasy; my stomach turns," Flanagan told The New York Times. "It's like if you're dating someone and it goes well and you want more."

Flanagan ran the 2017 NYC Marathon in 2 hours, 26 minutes, 53 seconds to become the first female American to win the race since 1977.

"When I experienced winning New York last year, it was like when you're sitting on your couch and finally something happens that you didn't realize would happen and it excites you," Flanagan said. "But this was my real life! It was the outcome of always wanting it and not knowing if I was going to get it. And suddenly everything I'd worked for was validated. I got it."

She had been considering retirement at the time but returned to finish seventh in the Boston Marathon in April. Des Linden, who won the Boston race, is also set to race New York this year.

The New York City Marathon is scheduled for Nov. 4.

The Swiss pair of Manuela Schar and Marcel Hug also will defend their titles in the wheelchair competition.
