Leaders of United States Olympic sports programs have been called before a House subcommittee to testify about sexual abuse cases, which have been high profile of late in gymnastics. Among the people set to speak to the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations on May 23 are United States Olympic Committee acting CEO Susanne Lyons and USA Gymnastics CEO Kerry Perry. Leaders of the U.S. swimming and taekwondo programs, as well as the head of the U.S. Center for SafeSport, are also scheduled to testify. Hundreds of gymnasts have accused former USA Gymnastics national team doctor Larry Nassar of sexually abusing them under the guise of medical treatment. Nassar is serving decades in prison for sexual abuse and possession of child pornography. A number of gymnasts are suing the USOC and USA Gymnastics, saying the organizations did not do enough to prevent Nassar's abuse. In June, accusations were levied against former taekwondo Olympic gold medalist Steven Lopez and his brother and coach, Jean Lopez. USA Swimming previously dealt with sexual abuse cases in 2010, which led to the founding of the SafeSport program. The House Energy and Commerce Committee has been investigating all 48 national governing bodies in an expanded effort that began in March.
