Alistair Brownlee outgunned his younger brother Jonny to take the World Triathlon Series event in their hometown of Leeds.

In front of 100,000 people lining the streets to cheer the siblings on, it was Olympic champion Alistair who won the day -- completing a 1.5kilometre swim, a 38.6km bike ride and a 10km run around the city centre in one hour, 46 minutes and 51 seconds.

It was the first time the brothers have raced together since last year, when Alistair carried stricken Jonny over the line in the World Series curtain-closer in Mexico.

Another second-place finish for Olympic silver medalist Jonny represents an upturn in fortunes after a bike crash saw him finish 42nd in Japan last month, while back in third was Spain's Fernando Alarza.

The Brownlees were among the first competitors to emerge from the water and quickly established themselves as leaders on the biking leg -- with only the French pair of Pierre Le Corre and Aurelien Raphael for company.

By the end of the middle phase of the competition, the brothers had burned off their last remaining rivals and were left to run for the top two places. After halfway, Alistair began to pull away and by the finish line, had built up enough of a lead to walk over the line amid a warm welcome in Millennium Square.

The women's race was won by reigning world champion Flora Duffy with Taylor Spivey and Alice Betto in second and third respectively.
