Simon Shnapir retires

FigureSkating

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Two-time U.S. pairs champion Simon Shnapir is retiring from figure skating.

The 27-year-old Shnapir said Tuesday he planned to coach and work in broadcasting. He won back-to-back national titles with Marissa Castelli in 2013 and '14, and they finished ninth at the Sochi Olympics, where they were part of the bronze medal-winning American squad in the team event. It was a homecoming for Shnapir, who was born in Russia before his family emigrated and settled outside Boston.

Shnapir and Castelli split a few months after the Olympics. Shnapir then teamed with DeeDee Leng, and they finished eighth at this year's U.S. championships as their partnership was hindered by injuries.

Leng is recovering from a concussion and has yet to decide what she'll do next.

"I am grateful for the many years that I had the privilege to represent Team USA," Shnapir said.
