BEREA, Ohio -- Baker Mayfield says being named the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback is just "a beginning."
"I didn't come here just to win one game, and I didn't come here just to start the next," Mayfield said Monday after coach Hue Jackson announced he would start Sunday against the Oakland Raiders. "We're building a franchise here, and we're turning it around. It's about culture."
Mayfield did his part to generate excitement about the Browns' latest build in Thursday night's win over the New York Jets. In that game, Mayfield completed 17 of 23 passes for 201 yards and led the Browns back from a 14-0 deficit to a 21-17 victory.
Jackson said the way Mayfield played made it easy for him to make the move from Tyrod Taylor to the draft's first overall pick.
"There was nothing that I saw that he was not ready to handle," Jackson said.
Mayfield replaces Taylor, who remained in the NFL concussion protocol on Monday. Jackson was hopeful that Taylor would be cleared to play Sunday but was clear that the move to Mayfield is not for one game.
Jackson said, however, the Browns are not interested in trading Taylor.
"He is going to be right here. He is not going anywhere. I think that is important. Like I said, I think part of Baker being able to play like he did was because of Tyrod and Drew (Stanton). I do not want to upset that room that way. I do not think there is any reason to," Jackson said.
"Tyrod is going to be needed. He is the backup quarterback on this team if he is healthy, and he has played. His teammates know who he is and how he goes about the rhythm of his game. I think it is always good to have that kind of depth at that position, especially if we are travelling down this road, which we are."
Of Mayfield's game Thursday, Jackson said "he nailed it" and "checked off every box for me."
Mayfield got his first practice reps with the starters on Monday. He did nothing to diminish hopes that he can continue what he started.
"I'm happy with how I played without any reps," Mayfield said. "So right now I have very, very high expectations of myself having a full week of practice and being able to get the reps with those guys."
Mayfield will be the Browns' 30th starting quarterback since they resumed play in 1999, the most by any team in the NFL in that time. Cleveland has one playoff appearance, in 2002, in that span.
"It's 2018," Mayfield said. "I don't really care."
