Bills GM says Tyrod Taylor isn't only problem on offense

NFL, Buffalo Bills

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane expressed displeasure Tuesday with the team's offense, which finished 29th in yards per game (302.6) and tied for 24th in offensive points scored (17.6) this season.

"We're not satisfied with the whole offense, and it wasn't just about [quarterback] Tyrod [Taylor]," Beane said during the Bills' end-of-season news conference. "There's a lot of hands in the cookie jar, so to speak. [coach] Sean [McDermott] and I, we're going to talk about everything. We know we have to get better on offense, on defense, on special teams. We are far from a finished product."

The Bills scored only three points in their AFC wild-card playoff loss Sunday to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

McDermott declined to comment about whether offensive coordinator Rick Dennison would return next season, saying he would not speculate about the future of coaches or players until his evaluations on them are complete.

Taylor is under contract only through 2018 as part of a pay cut he took last offseason. He is due a $6 million roster bonus on the third day of the league year, which begins March 14. The Bills could release Taylor as early as Feb. 5, the day after the Super Bowl, and could trade him as soon as March 14.

In his third season as Buffalo's starting quarterback, Taylor finished 14th in Total QBR (53.0), 16th in passer rating (89.2), 15th in completion percentage (62.6), 23rd in yards per pass attempt (6.66) and 25th in passing touchdowns (14). Taylor's Total QBR, passer rating, yards per attempt and passing touchdowns have all declined in each of his three seasons since joining the Bills in 2015.

"Tyrod has a lot of ability," Beane said Tuesday. "He really does. We saw some of those things. He did a lot of good things this year. He'll tell you that he has weaknesses to work on, just like a lot of other guys. The great thing about Tyrod is you can never question his work ethic."
