Source: QB Ryan Mallett likely to sign back on as Ravens backup

Quarterback Ryan Mallett will likely re-sign with the Baltimore Ravens, sources told ESPN.

Mallett, who will turn 29 on June 5, is an intriguing strong-armed passer and has been a model backup for the Ravens.

He led an upset of the AFC North rival Pittsburgh Steelers in 2015 before being limited to six passes last season behind a healthy Joe Flacco. More importantly, Mallett was never a distraction in Baltimore. It was two years ago when Mallett was cut by the Houston Texans for being late for meetings and missing a team charter flight.

The biggest challenge for Mallett now is consistency. He has never completed more than 60 percent of his passes in a season, and he has never thrown more touchdowns than interceptions in a season.

Mallett has a 3-5 career record as a starter. A third-round pick by the New England Patriots in 2011, he was traded to the Texans in 2014 before joining the Ravens in December 2015.

Information from ESPN's Dianna Russini was used in this report.
