Langman and Kopua back for Silver Ferns

Netball greats Laura Langman and Casey Kopua are returning to the Silver Ferns in a massive fillip to the team's spiralling fortunes.

The pair are included in a 17-strong New Zealand squad although Kopua is one of five players who won't be involved in next month's Quad Series which involves Australia.

There are also three new caps, with 18-year-old shooter Aliyah Dunn and midcourters Elisapeta and Karin Burger all to contest the Quad Series.

It is the start of a redemption period for the Silver Ferns, whose reputation was tarnished by a worst-ever Commonwealth Games performance.

A fourth-placed finish on the Gold Coast in April prompted a review and resulted in the resignation of coach Janine Southby.

A new coach is still to be unveiled but is widely expected to be the accomplished Noeline Taurua.

Taurua's appointment is likely to be confirmed when her Sunshine Coast Lightning team's involvement in the Australian Super Netball championship finishes.

Experienced Games squad members Grace Kara and Shannon Francois have both been omitted by the national selection panel.

Langman's return will be welcomed.

Arguably New Zealand's finest-ever midcourter, she became ineligible for Test duty when choosing to play in the Australian league last year.

It ended a record run of 141 Tests up until October 2016, leaving her four short of the New Zealand record held by former shooter Irene van Dyk.

Langman, 32, took the first half of this year off to focus on an accountancy career.

It is believed the imminent appointment of her former domestic coach Taurua played a part in Langman's decision to return.

Former captain Kopua, 33, has emerged from retirement but won't be fit until at least the Constellation Cup series in October while she recovers from a foot injury.

The most recent of her 101 Tests was against Australia three years ago.

There are recalls for shooter Maia Wilson, defender Jane Watson and midcourter Gina Crampton, a member of the Southern Steel team who defended their national premiership title on Sunday with victory over the Central Pulse.
