Netball's Giants have new tricks for Fever

Netball

The Giants insist they have some different tricks for their Super Netball home major semi-final against the West Coast team they beat just last week.

The Sydney-based side stole the minor premiership away from the Fever, who held top spot for most of the campaign only to relinquish it with last Saturday's three-point loss.

"We picked apart all the things that we did really well and we think could work again," Giants captain Kimberlee Green said.

"They would have done their homework on those things so we've got a couple of other different little things up our sleeve.

"But also we took a lot out of that last quarter and how we can improve."

The Fever slashed a 14-goal three-quarter time deficit to three by the end of last week's final-round clash.

Green said the visitors switched to a zone system in the last term, while Giants coach Julie Fitzgerald lamented her team went right away from their game plan.

The captain stressed West Coast's rise this season wasn't due only to the addition of Jamaican shooter Jhaniele Fowler, the competition's leading goal-scorer.

"I think a lot of people put it down to just Fowler but it's the work rate of the midcourters. They've really stepped it up," Green said.

"Nat (Medhurst) is feeding beautifully. I think she's one of the best feeders in the game.

"But also their defenders. The ability to come out and get ball is really important for them.

"I think a lot of people underestimate all the work the rest of them do to get that ball to Fowler."

The Giants also boast an international shooting combination in Australian veteran Susan Pettitt and England's Jo Harten.

Fever captain Courtney Bruce said her team had gone from being the hunter to the hunted.

"I think that changes the mindset a bit. I think the pressure is on the Giants to perform," the Diamonds star said about Saturday's clash.

Star midcourter Verity Charles, who injured her left knee in the final minute of last week's loss, is unlikely to face the Giants at Sydney Olympic Park.
