Giants netballers given 'licence to play'

Netball

In their second season since foundation, the Giants are developing the type of combinations and creative flow that is setting their side apart from the rest.

Assists are far more evenly spread across the stat sheet at the western Sydney outfit in comparison to most teams - with feed duties shared between wing attack Kim Green, shooters Susan Pettitt and Jo Harten and - despite her defensive focus - centre Serena Guthrie.

Giants coaching staff recognise the wealth of talent they have in their squad and more specifically how skilled some of those players are at reading the game.

"I think we want to be different, we don't want to be predictable. We want to be able to make things happen," head coach Julie Fitzgerald said.

"We've got that ability to be creative - sometimes it doesn't quite come off and coaches get anxious but I think it's something we need to keep building on."

During a 63-60 home win over Collingwood Magpies on Sunday, there were times when visiting defenders stood in disbelief as the likes of Harten and Green threw incisive passes to find Pettitt under the post.

Fitzgerald clearly believes in what they are trying to do but the traditionalist in her baulks at one column on the stat sheet: "I don't want to know how many unforced errors that creativity brought."

Goal shooter Pettitt is in a better position than most to speak on her teammates ability to find that little bit extra and make the unexpected assist happen.

"It's a licence to play," she said. "Just being able to see what's out there on court - obviously we have structures but if you see something: play it.

"When Jo (Harten) and I are looking for each other, it's really on and I think the more we play together the more the connection comes."
