McCarron signs with United for three years

NBL

Guard Mitch McCarron has signed a three year contract with Melbourne United.

The 25-year-old will join the club in early July after the World Cup qualifiers with the Boomers.

Head coach Dean Vickerman says the club is excited to have lured McCarron back from Petrol Olimpija Ljubljana in Europe.

"Mitch is one of the most versatile guards in the league who can play any of those three guard positions," Vickerman said in a statement on Friday.

"So certainly his versatility is something that attracted us to him.

"To be a top five offensive rebounder at 6'2 is quite an incredible category for him to be a leader in."

The 2017/18 NBL season was a career highlight for McCarron, who averaged 11.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and three assists per game for the Cairns Taipans.

His performance saw him become the leading Australian vote getter in the 2017/18 NBL MVP count.

Vickerman says the guard will be more than an offensive threat.

"I think on different nights he'll have different assignments," he said.

"He's keen to have the ball in his hands as well and continue to get better at his pick-and-roll offence."
