The Celtics are now 24th in offense after tonight's putrid showing. Yes, Gordon Hayward is still working his way back. But, at some point, the numbers are what they are.

Mitchell scores 28, Jazz beat Celtics 98-86

Donovan Mitchell had 28 points and six assists, bouncing back from one of his worst performances of the season and leading the Utah Jazz to a 98-86 win over the Boston Celtics on Saturday night.

So much for momentum for the Celtics, who lose 98-86 to Utah tonight. Kyrie Irving led the Celtics with 20 points, while Boston went just 5-33 from 3. Donovan Mitchell had 28 points and 6 assists for the Jazz after a rough showing last night in Philly.

Brad Stevens has gone with Kyrie Irving and four end of the bench guys — Daniel Theis, Brad Wanamaker, Guerschon Yabusele and Semi Ojeleye — for the past few minutes. Irving finally just came out, as Utah is now up by 22 with five minutes left.

Gordon Hayward appeared to have a fast break dunk — only for Donovan Mitchell to come out of nowhere to block it, leading to a Utah dunk at the other end. Jazz fans undoubtedly loved that sequence.

Gordon Hayward still has plenty of work to do — his explosion around the rim is still noticeably lacking — but he looks far better getting into the paint tonight than he did even a week ago. One sign of progress in what remains a long road back.

Kyrie Irving heads straight to the bench after picking up a fifth foul midway through the third, and with the Celtics already down by double-digits. Boston's fourth quarter explosion offensively last night feels very far away.

Mitchell loses Irving and finishes and-1 layup (0:30)

Tim Bontemps ESPN

After taking 35 shots last night — and recording no assists — Donovan Mitchell looks far better tonight. Has 20 points on 8-15 shooting and, more importantly, is getting his shots within the flow of Utah's offense, rather than forcing things to happen.

Kyrie Irving just dusted Ricky Rubio with a ridiculous behind-the-back dribble and then buried a triple. That'll be all over @SportsCenter later tonight.

Gordon Hayward with a nice move into the lane and hits a fade-away jumper. After playing 39 minutes last night, Hayward has looked solid attacking the paint on a couple of occasions early on tonight.

Boston has picked up where it left off last night — being aggressive in attacking the rim. Jayson Tatum just going right at Rudy Gobert for a jam is the latest example.

Brad Stevens says Gordon Hayward will play tonight, and has no minutes or playing restrictions moving forward. Said the last hurdle was playing in both halves of last week's back-to-back in Phoenix and Utah.

Markelle Fultz on his new approach at the free throw line: "Yeah it's something I added right now. Just trial and error. It's been working nice for me so I'm going to stick with it for now." Fultz said he feels comfortable with the free-throw style, in which he shuffles the ball back and forth between his hands before shooting.

Mitchell at a loss after rare 35-shot, 0-assist night

Donovan Mitchell scored 31 points on 35 shot attempts and had zero assists, leaving the second-year Jazz star to question his performance in Utah's 113-107 loss to the 76ers.

Joel Embiid said he hurt his hand early in Friday's win over the Jazz. He said his hand has been hurting on and off since last season when he injured it against the Suns. Embiid said his hand was swollen after the Sixers' win but he expects to play Saturday night.

Ben Simmons converging a layup late in the fourth to give Philadelphia a lead and getting fouled by Donovan Mitchell had to be meaningful. Mitchell and Simmons had a public battle over the Rookie of the Year award last season.
