Tim Duncan requests Hurricane Irma relief donations toward native U.S. Virgin Islands

NBA, San Antonio Spurs, Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Former San Antonio Spurs forward Tim Duncan is one of only four players from the U.S. Virgin Islands to have ever appeared in an NBA game. As Hurricane Irma ravages his homeland, with Hurricane Jose not far behind, the future Hall of Famer is asking for help.

Duncan penned an urgent article via the Players' Tribune on Friday, requesting donations toward the relief effort around the islands.

Duncan wrote that he has already pledged $250,000 and promises to match any additional contributions up to $1 million.

Born in Christiansted on the island of St. Croix, Duncan moved to the United States in 1993 after enrolling at Wake Forest. He played four years with the Demon Deacons before the Spurs selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in 1997.
