DALLAS -- Disgruntled Minnesota Timberwolves star Jimmy Butler will not play Saturday night against the Dallas Mavericks due to precautionary rest, the team announced.
Butler, who has been engaged in a standoff with the organization since he requested a trade the week before training camp opened, scored 33 points on 10-of-12 shooting in 36 minutes to lead the Timberwolves to a 131-123 win Friday night over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Butler did not make the trip to Dallas. Timberwolves coach Tom Thibodeau said the decision to rest the All-Star swingman was made after Friday night's win, when he discussed the issue with Butler.
"I knew going in, looking at the schedule, where we were and the amount of time he's practiced, I knew we would talk after the game," Thibodeau said before Saturday's game. "It's what I wanted, too. Obviously, I wanted his input, but I wanted to be smart about it."
On Friday, the Minnesota home crowd showered Butler with boos during pregame introductions. However, Timberwolves fans serenaded him with "MVP!" chants after his spectacular performance.
"I love it. I love it," Butler said after the game. "I think people kind of love to hate me sometimes. Say whatever you want to say, but it really makes me smile, what people think about me. But no matter what, you gotta respect my effort."
The Timberwolves went 37-22 with Butler and 10-13 without him last season.
Butler is one of a few stars who will rest as a precaution on the second game of a back-to-back Saturday night.
Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward will rest against the New York Knicks as the team proceeds with caution in his comeback from a broken right ankle that sidelined him all of last season.
Toronto Raptors forward Kawhi Leonard, who missed most of last season due to a quadriceps injury and related disagreement with the San Antonio Spurs before being traded over the summer, will rest against the Washington Wizards.
