Bulls, Bobby Portis fail to reach rookie contract extension

NBA, Chicago Bulls

Chicago Bulls forward Bobby Portis will likely become a restricted free agency in July, failing to reach a rookie contract extension before the Monday afternoon deadline, agent Mark Bartelstein told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

"Both sides want to revisit talks after the season," Bartelstein said.

A first-round draft pick of the Bulls in 2015, Portis averaged career highs of 13.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game last season.

His 2017-18 season didn't get off to a good start as he was suspended for the first eight games of the season by the Bulls for punching then-teammate Nikola Mirotic during a practice altercation.

The incident, which took place almost exactly one year ago, left Mirotic with a concussion and facial fractures and caused him to miss the first 23 games of the season.
