Sources: Dwane Casey meets with Pistons as coaching search continues

NBA, Detroit Pistons

Dwane Casey, a front-runner for NBA Coach of the Year, met with Detroit Pistons executives on Thursday to discuss the franchise's head coaching opening, league sources told ESPN.

Casey interviewed with a Pistons contingent in Michigan that includes new senior adviser Ed Stefanski and coaching-search consultants Bernie Bickerstaff and Jim Lynam, league sources said.

Casey can be selective in choosing his next head coaching job. After getting fired by Toronto in May, Casey is owed $6.5 million on the final year of his contract. Casey coached the Raptors to seven playoff appearances in seven years, compiling a 320-238 record.

The Pistons are running concurrent searches for a head coach and possibly a new general manager. Jeff Bower, the GM under former president and coach Stan Van Gundy, remains on staff. His contract expires later this spring.

Detroit is planning to meet with several candidates, including Miami Heat assistant Juwan Howard, over the next week, league sources said.

Casey led the Raptors to a franchise-record 59 regular-season victories and an Eastern Conference semifinal appearance, but a second consecutive sweep in the playoffs to Cleveland ended his tenure.
