After a 2016-17 season with no coaching changes, there has been plenty of movement on that front in 2017-18. Three coaches lost their jobs during the season, and the offseason firings began just hours after the regular season ended. We'll be on top of all the moves as they happen. Atlanta Hawks Who's out: Mike Budenholzer
Who's in: Lloyd Pierce Budenholzer was granted permission to meet with the Suns about their opening, and though he later withdrew from consideration from that job, he and the Hawks mutually agreed to part ways. He'll be replaced with Philadelphia 76ers assistant Lloyd Pierce, who the Hawks announced they'd come to terms with on May 11.
Charlotte Hornets Who's out: Steve Clifford
Who's in: James Borrego The Hornets are finalizing a deal to hire San Antonio assistant James Borrego as head coach, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Tuesday. Borrego has been an NBA assistant with the Spurs, Pelicans and Magic since 2003. Clifford, who took a medical leave of absence earlier this season, had been with Charlotte since their final season as the Bobcats. But back-to-back seasons finishing 10 games below .500 marked the end of his tenure with the franchise.
Detroit Pistons Who's out: Stan Van Gundy
Who's in: Dwane Casey Casey has reached an agreement on a five-year deal to become the next coach of the Pistons, league sources tell ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The agreement comes one month after Casey was fired by the Toronto Raptors, who went 59-23 this past season en route to the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference but lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the playoffs. The Pistons and Van Gundy parted ways after the team failed to make the playoffs for the second consecutive season. Van Gundy had one year and $7 million left on his original five-year deal. Memphis Grizzlies Who's out: David Fizdale
Who's in: J.B. Bickerstaff The Grizzlies were on top of the NBA in the season's early weeks, but an eight-game losing skid and a frayed relationship with Marc Gasol ended up costing Fizdale his job. That losing streak extended to 11 under Bickerstaff, who eventually finished with a 15-48 mark in his second interim coaching job (he went 37-34 with the Houston Rockets in 2015-16). Bickerstaff made a strong impression on management and Grizzlies players under difficult circumstances and, as a result, ultimately became the clear choice to earn the job full time. Milwaukee Bucks Who's out: Jason Kidd, Joe Prunty (interim)
Who's in: Mike Budenholzer Despite the support of superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kidd was fired 45 games into the season, his fourth at the helm of the Bucks. Longtime NBA assistant Prunty was named the interim coach for the remainder of the season and guided Milwaukee to a 21-16 finish and a first-round playoff matchup with the Toronto Raptors. The Bucks moved on from Prunty after the season, reaching an agreement with former Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.
New York Knicks Who's out: Jeff Hornacek
Who's in: David Fizdale A season-ending win over the Cleveland Cavaliers wasn't enough to save Hornacek, who was fired when the team got back to New York after the finale. Hornacek was 60-104 in two seasons with the Knicks.
Orlando Magic Who's out: Frank Vogel
Who's in: Steve Clifford The good feelings from Orlando's hot start quickly faded as the Magic slumped to a 25-57 finish, leading to Vogel being fired after two seasons at the helm. Vogel was 54-110 in two seasons with the Magic. Orlando stayed in the division to find Vogel's replacement, hiring former Hornets coach Steve Clifford.
Phoenix Suns Who's out: Earl Watson, Jay Triano (interim)
Who's in: Igor Kokoskov A dismal start and a disgruntled Eric Bledsoe doomed Watson, who was fired just three games into the season. Triano, the former head coach of the Toronto Raptors, took over on an interim basis and guided the Suns to the worst record in the league, securing the best odds for the top pick in May's draft lottery. Triano was eventually removed from consideration for the full-time job, which went to Kokoskov, a Utah Jazz assistant. Pelton: The real reason the Suns didn't succeed under Earl Watson
Toronto Raptors Who's out: Dwane Casey
Who's in: Nick Nurse The Raptors will hire assistant Nick Nurse as the franchise's new head coach, league sources tell ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Nurse will replace Dwane Casey, who was fired last month after leading the Raptors to a franchise-record 59-win regular season and the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.
