FIBA AfroBasket Wrap: Nigeria beaten by DRC but advance to quarters

The defending FIBA AfroBasket champions Nigeria were upset by the Democratic Republic of Congo who won their final Group A game 83-77.

Evarist Shonganya and Myck Kabongo were the outsnding players for the DRC and combined for 37 points. Shongayna scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds, Kabongo added 17 points to the score, also claiming six boards and passing eight assists.

Nigeria's Ike Diogu was the top-scorer for his team with 21 points. He also pulled down seven rebounds. Ike Iroegbu ended the game with 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

Nigeria face Cameroon in the quarter-finals and the DRC take on co-hosts Tunisia in their quarter-final matchup. In other results: In Rades, Tunis in the other Group A game, Mali overpowered Cote d'Ivoire 92-63.

The result wasn't good enough for Mali to advance to the next phase as both teams bowed out of the competition.

In Group B Morocco remained undefeated with victory over Uganda. Morocco won the game 79-70 despite some intense pressure from the East African team.

Also in Group B Angola overcame the Central African Republic 66-44 in a must-win game for the Angolans. Inspirational captain Carlos Morais scored 17 points to lead his team to victory.

In Group C Tunisia defeated Guinea 64-59 and moved on to the Last Eight of the 16-team competition undefeated. Tunisia won their group and were joined by Cameroon in the quarters.

In Group D action Senegal made light work of Mozambique, beating the Southern Africans 80-49 to also go unbeaten in their three games.

Also in Group D Egypt ensured South Africa had a miserable tournament as the North Africans thumped South Africa 70-51.

Amr Abdelhalim lead the Egyptians in scoring with 13 points. In the quarter-finals taking place on Thursday 14 September, Tunisia will go up against the DRC; Senegal will battle Angola; Nigeria face Cameroon and Morocco lock horns with Egypt.
