Rosters for NBA Africa 2017 confirmed

NBA

The full team rosters for the NBA Africa Game 2017, which will take place in Johannesburg, were confirmed by the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) recently.

This year's event is the second of its kind and, as was the case for the previous edition in 2015, will be played in a Team Africa vs. Team World format.

The match will take place on August 5 at the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg, South Africa, and will be played in support of various charities, including UNICEF, and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Thabo Sefolosha (Utah Jazz, South Africa/Switzerland) and Luol Deng (Los Angeles Lakers; South Sudan) will lead Team Africa -- a team comprised of Africans and second-generation African players.

Sefolosha, who was born in Switzerland but has a South African father, has established himself as one of the leading guard/forwards in the NBA and recently completed a move to Utah Jazz, after spending three seasons on the books of the Atlanta Hawks.

Other prominent players on the African roster include Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers; Cameroon), Serge Ibaka (Toronto Raptors; Congo) and Gorgui Dieng (Minnesota Timberwolves; Senegal).

"Basketball is witnessing explosive growth in Africa. Our return to Johannesburg this summer is part of the League's continued commitment to bring the authentic NBA experience to fans around the world. I would like to thank the NBPA for their participation and for being terrific partners on this game and surrounding events," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in a NBA release.

Dirk Nowitzki (Mavericks; Germany) and Kemba Walker (Charlotte Hornets; US) will lead Team World, which also includes the likes of DeMarcus Cousins (New Orleans Pelicans; US), and Kristaps Porzingis (Knicks; Latvia).

Cousins has played some of the best basketball of his career after moving to the New Orleans Pelicans in February this year, while Porzingis is one of the highest rated young players in the sport, and was the fourth pick in the 2015 NBA draft.
