WALTHAM, Mass. -- Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas said he's talked with potential No. 1 pick Markelle Fultz since Boston landed the top spot in Tuesday's draft lottery, adding that he thinks the two could thrive together.
Thomas wouldn't divulge the full nature of their conversations but said Fultz is excited for the possibility of being the top pick and playing in Boston.
Both Thomas and Fultz are University of Washington products and have crossed paths on campus there in recent years. They both have said in the past that they could coexist in the same backcourt at the NBA level.
"He's excited," Thomas said. "I mean, he obviously doesn't know where he's going, but ... he's excited about the opportunity."
Thomas said Fultz inquired about the culture of the Celtics organization, to which Thomas has offered insight into how things work.
"He asks questions; I answer them," Thomas said. "He's a good friend of mine. If it happens, we'll figure out how to play together. If not, we'll go from there."
Thomas, who earned All-NBA second team honors Thursday, said he'll ultimately leave personnel decisions to Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge and his staff.
"I try to just focus on what I'm doing on the court and let those guys focus on making those decisions," Thomas said. "But whatever they do ... I mean, whatever happens, happens."
Thomas, who was the 60th pick in the 2011 draft, was playfully asked whether it would have been better if Boston landed the final pick instead of the first.
"No," Thomas said with a smile. "There ain't going to be another last pick like that."
